Stocks and currencies in Asia barely move

SYDNEY, NSW, Australia - Stocks in Asia hardly moved on Thursday with little news to drive markets in any direction.

Foreign currency markets were little moved. The Nikkei 225 in Japan finished the day with a gain of one-third of a single point. The index closed at 28,875.33 with no percentage movement recorded.

China's Shanghai Composite added just 0.43 of a single point or 0.01 percent to 3,565.66

The Australian All Ordinaries fell 13.00 points or 0.17 percent to 7,539.10.

In Hong Kong, the Hang Seng gained 65.31 points or 0.23 percent to 28,882.46.

The U.S. dollar also spent the day putting traders to sleep. The currency was absolutely unmoved against all the majors. The euro traded at 1.1937. The British pound was quoted at 1.3954. The Japanese yen was changing hands at 0.9186.

The Canadian dollar rose one single base point to 1.2298. The Australian dollar finished around the Sydney close exactly in line with its New York close of 0.7572. The New Zealand dollar traded coma-like, finishing at 0.7057.

Overnight on Wall Street, the Nasdaq did best, rising 18.46 points or 0.13 percent to 14,271.73.

The Dow Jones industrials dropped 71.34 points or 0.21 percent to 33,874.24.

The Standard and Poor's 500 slipped 4.58 points or 0.11 percent to 4,241.86.
